Last weekend, I took the BMW Z4 M40i, a two-seater convertible, for a test drive while enjoying a drive around the metropolitan area and a round of golf.
I have already tested both the 20i and M40i models, but this time I decided to evaluate it from the perspective of a potential owner to determine whether to make a purchase.
I have already driven both the 20i and M40i models, and this time I aimed for an objective assessment as a potential owner to decide on the purchase.
The Z4 is BMW's only two-seater convertible model.
While it's true that the 4 Series convertible is more practical, I concluded that no other convertible can match the Z4's emotional appeal.
Moreover, since my wife really wants this model, we started considering it as a second car.
During this test drive, I did find some inconveniences in terms of practicality.
However, I concluded that among the two-seater convertible models available in Korea, the Z4 stands out as the best.
Today, I will share the specifications and driving evaluations of the BMW Z4 M40i and 20i, as well as the reasons why I chose this model among numerous convertibles.
I didn't consider the brand's influence when providing this review, but I want to clarify that this is a personal review from a prospective owner.
The appeal of convertibles?
This season, with the pleasant weather, as well as in summer and winter, the ability to enjoy driving freely captured our hearts.
My wife and I are not particularly attention-seeking.
However, we don't feel self-conscious when driving with the soft top down.
Instead, we feel a sense of freedom and excitement while driving, which helps release the stress we've accumulated.
Listening to our favorite music while driving elevates our mood, wouldn’t you agree?
The compact size of the convertible makes it perfect for romantic dates with couples or partners.
The sporty and sophisticated design captures attention wherever you go.
This model is one that my wife often expresses a desire to drive around for relaxation.
This model is one I would like to purchase in early 2023 and drive for the next 20 years.
When I reach my 60s, driving a classic convertible will surely earn me compliments about aging gracefully.
Although it may seem far-fetched, there are rumors that this model will soon be discontinued.
I believe the resale value of the facelift model set to be released in early 2023 will increase significantly.
The 2023 facelift model will undoubtedly see a price increase, but the recently revealed design, even with minor changes, appears more sophisticated and trendy.
Through this test drive, I found the practicality exceeded my expectations.
If utilized well, it could be a great vehicle for golf outings or domestic travel.
The BMW Z4 comes in two models: the 20i and M40i.
Although its length and width resemble those of the 1 Series, its height is significantly lower by 131 mm, and the wheelbase is designed to be 220 mm shorter.
As a two-seater model, it requires space for the soft top to fold, resulting in a surprisingly short wheelbase.
Wheelbase: 2,470 mm
While those who enjoy high-speed driving prefer the M40i, I recommend the 20i model for those who want to feel the open-air experience at a more affordable price.

When I previously test-drove the 20i model, I had no desire to push it to its limits.
However, the ability to open the soft top does offer a certain appeal. |
In terms of driving performance, while it may not excel, the exterior allows you to experience the allure of a perfect sports convertible. |
|
Moreover, the black soft top matches well with all colors and enhances the overall design. |
|
|
The driving performance varies significantly in terms of satisfaction.
|
As mentioned earlier, the M40i boasts a maximum power of 387 horsepower and a maximum torque of 50.99 kg·m, delivering powerful driving performance. | Considering its compact size and light curb weight of 1,580 kg, it feels like it has an abundance of power.
|
While driving, features like lane departure warning, semi-autonomous driving, adaptive cruise control, and heads-up display provide comfort and ease.
Opening the soft top enhances the sense of speed, but my wife felt a bit scared on the highway.
This car is definitely not designed for comfort, so if you focus on powerful and dynamic driving performance, it's best to set aside expectations for comfort.
My wife and I considered the 20i model for financial reasons, but after test-driving the M40i, I believe that even a small model should have a displacement of at least 3.0L.
It's not an encouragement to speed, but there’s something exhilarating about cruising with the soft top down.
In conclusion, a stand bag with a soft top can fit, but a hard case caddy bag barely fits.
If you want to drive the BMW Z4 to the golf course, you can simply switch to a stand bag.
The photos below show that not only golf bags but also large Boston bags can fit, so those who prefer to golf alone should definitely consider the appeal of a two-seater convertible.
Should I wait for the facelift?
Considering these factors, there is demand for purchases before the facelift, but since the import volume is limited and discounts are minimal, the actual purchase price remains similar regardless of when you buy.
The Next Car for the Double Viewing Couple?
While there is a four-series convertible model that can utilize the rear seats, I find it impossible to turn back from the allure of the BMW Z4, which truly embodies the charm of a sports car.
The existing model is beautiful, but I am especially looking forward to the facelift design set to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2023.
