Recently, the electric vehicle brand that has captured my attention is undoubtedly BYD. With world-class battery technology and competitive pricing, BYD has already achieved a dominant market share in China, surpassing Tesla in electric vehicle sales. The brand is steadily expanding globally, solidifying its recognition.
While some may still find BYD electric vehicles unfamiliar, they have actually made significant inroads in the domestic market, particularly with commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. This suggests that their capabilities have already been validated. If BYD expands into electric sedan models, the impact could be substantial.
Today, I want to introduce the electric truck sector. In the one-ton truck and refrigerated vehicle segment, BYD offers lower prices and discount promotions compared to its competitors. For the T4K truck, the price difference can reach at least 5 to 6 million KRW ($3,800 to $4,600 USD) compared to the Porter and Bongo models.
The pricing includes a 10 million KRW ($7,600 USD) discount promotion with an expected VAT refund of 3.3 million KRW ($2,500 USD), bringing the actual purchase price down to the mid-10 million KRW range. This alleviates the financial burden for self-employed individuals in the freight sector during these challenging economic times. However, we also need to consider aspects like driving range and battery stability since it is an electric truck.
According to specifications, the driving range is 300 to 350 km (186 to 217 miles) at room temperature, and about 250 km (155 miles) in cold conditions. The truck uses LFP blade batteries, which excel in fire safety. The design ensures that even when fully loaded, the battery pack remains secure, especially over bumps. Both the front and rear wheels feature the same 15-inch tires.
The 12.8-inch monitor includes electric vehicle-specific T-MAP navigation and voice recognition features, enhancing convenience during operation. The V2L function allows for up to 300W of electricity for small appliances or up to 3kW for outdoor activities, camping, or tool usage.
There are various truck models available, but the most intriguing aspect is undoubtedly the discount promotions. According to Kim Sung-joo, manager of the BYD Guri showroom, the 2024 T4K electric truck is available with discounts of up to 10 million KRW ($7,600 USD) based on inventory, while the 2025 model offers an 8 million KRW ($6,100 USD) discount...
The refrigerated vehicles are currently undergoing unprecedented discount promotions of up to 14 million KRW ($10,600 USD).
Consequently, the actual purchase price of the BYD refrigerated vehicle drops to the lower end of the 20 million KRW ($15,200 USD) range. Many newcomers to the business often consider used vehicles, but at this price point, the difference from used vehicles is minimal, making it more advantageous to purchase a new vehicle.
Notably, the BYD refrigerated vehicle features a dedicated all-in-one controller, eliminating the need for an additional auxiliary battery, which reduces costs. It also incorporates durable honeycomb door panels with high-strength thermoplastic properties. Key components such as the door frame and floor utilize aluminum for corrosion resistance, and the panels connecting the interior and exterior of the cargo area are equipped with an ultra-low temperature cooling PE system, which helps maintain the cold temperature for an extended period.
Since the cooling performance relies on the battery, the driving range of the BYD refrigerated vehicle is shorter than that of conventional electric trucks. It boasts a driving range of 205 km (127 miles) at room temperature and 164 km (102 miles) in cold conditions, which is the longest range in its class.
We should also consider service and warranty periods. The BYD electric truck comes with an eight-year or 120,000 km warranty on electric vehicle-specific parts, including the battery, drive motor, reducer, and all-in-one controller.
