Reports indicate that the Genesis G70 sells more overseas than in its domestic market. According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association on the 30th, G70 exports reached about 9,200 units in August. This figure is approximately 2.5 times higher than domestic sales of 3,700 units. When considering exports alone, the G70 surpasses the G80's 5,700 units.
Compared to last year, exports increased by 22.2%, while domestic sales decreased by 32.8%. The U.S. market accounts for the majority of overseas sales, with cumulative sales in the U.S. reaching about 9,000 units by August this year.
Genesis launched the G70 in 2017. The current G70 model underwent a facelift in October 2020. Its exterior dimensions are 184.4 inches [4685mm] in length, 55.1 inches [1400mm] in height, and 72.8 inches [1850mm] in width, showcasing a sleek and well-designed sports sedan profile.
The powertrain options include 2.0-liter turbo and 3.3-liter turbo models. All models feature Sport Plus mode. The 3.3-liter turbo gasoline model offers an optional variable exhaust muffler as part of the sport package.
The exhaust gas sound pressure adjusts according to the accelerator pedal input. When selecting AWD (all-wheel drive), the vehicle comes equipped with a dynamic AWD system that enables drifting.
In July, Genesis released the G70 Shooting Brake model, offering increased cargo space. The cargo area measures 465 liters, about 40% larger than the sedan version. With the rear seats folded, it expands to 1,535 liters. The base price for the G70 starts at 40.35 million won [$34,000 USD], while the Shooting Brake model begins at 43.1 million won [$36,400 USD].
Genesis plans to give the G70 a facelift instead of releasing an entirely new model. Two years have passed since the first facelift in 2020. While a next-generation model was initially expected, the company is now preparing for a second facelift.
The powertrain is expected to remain unchanged. Some countries may consider adding hybrid or 48V supercharger options to comply with carbon emission regulations, but this remains undecided.
The new G70 is expected to feature a front design similar to the flagship G90 model, along with a redesigned interior. The rear of the new G70 will likely adopt the two-line taillamps seen on the Genesis G80 and GV80. Changes to the muffler and exhaust system are also anticipated.
The G70 facelift aims to maintain its sports sedan concept by reducing air resistance to improve power performance, fuel efficiency, and driving safety. After this partial change, instead of developing a next-generation model, Genesis will likely shift towards electric vehicles in line with its electrification commitment.
