BMW revealed spy shots of the new 5 Series full model change G60 during road tests last July. This marks the 8th generation full model change, coming about 6 years after the 7th generation 5 Series G30 unveiled in November 2016. Based on the rear-wheel-drive CLAR modular platform, the new model reportedly uses special lightweight materials to increase strength while reducing weight.
The front kidney grille is said to be of an appropriate size, unlike the X7 and 7 Series. We expect to see Angel Eye daytime running lights and LED or laser lights. The front bumper will likely feature a dynamic M Sport package design. The rear taillights are reportedly thinner than the current model, with connected taillights expected on both sides. The rear bumper is anticipated to have a sporty look with dual mufflers.
The new 5 Series will feature powertrains including mild hybrid (MHEV) gasoline and diesel engines, as well as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. With the addition of 48V hybrid technology, we expect a combination of 2.0-liter gasoline turbo and 3.0-liter diesel turbo engines with 8-speed Steptronic transmissions. All-wheel drive xDrive will likely be available depending on the trim. The 5 Series will also introduce its first electric vehicle, the i5. The i5 will share its powertrain with the 7 Series electric vehicle, though with a reduced battery capacity.
BMW is also expected to release the all-electric i5 and high-performance M5. The BMW i5 is anticipated to feature large-capacity batteries of 70kWh and 100kWh. The estimated maximum driving range on a single charge is 373 miles (about 600km) based on the WLTP standard. The M5 is said to produce 750 horsepower through a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system combining a V8 4.4L twin-turbo gasoline engine, electric motor, and electric battery. BMW plans to unveil the 8th generation new 5 Series next year.
Meanwhile, the interior of the new BMW 5 Series has also been spotted. International media outlet Carscoops confirmed the daytime running light design with production headlamps and parts of the interior. The 5 Series interior appears similar to the new 7 Series. It features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch curved display connected as one unit. Notably, the center console layout has become more streamlined, with climate control, front seat heating, and ventilation controls integrated into the display.
