BMW plans to unveil the BMW X8, its top-tier SUV lineup, on the 29th. The coupe-style SUV X8 will serve as the flagship for the high-performance M lineup, featuring a hybrid V8 engine. BMW has an M Performance division, which has confirmed the release date for the X8 on November 29.
The BMW X8, based on the SUV X7, is known by its project name G09. Competing models include the Audi RS Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo S, and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe. The X8 is expected to be slightly larger than these models.
The headlamp design, first revealed through the X7 facelift and the complete redesign of the 7 Series, will debut on the BMW X8. The vehicle will carry the M badge. The M team will tune the body, engine, and suspension, ensuring that the more than 5-meter-long luxury SUV delivers exceptional driving performance as a sports SUV.
The powertrain will feature a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine paired with an electric motor, expected to deliver an output of 760 horsepower. The BMW X8 is set to become the flagship model of the M division. Invitations for the X8's unveiling mention its high-performance hybrid capabilities and M flagship status.
This high-performance line will include an eco-friendly plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a straight-six internal combustion engine is also expected to be part of the BMW X8 lineup. A 48V mild hybrid system will be standard, with trims anticipated to include the BMW X8 40d, X8 40i, and 50i.
The 45e plug-in hybrid system, based on a straight-six 3L engine, will increase its output to earn the 50e badge. The BMW X8 50e is expected to reach approximately 500 horsepower, which is 100 horsepower more than the current model. To maintain its sporty character, the X8 may eliminate the third-row seating to reduce weight.
The X8 has revealed parts of its design through spy shots, showcasing a massive kidney grille, slim LED headlamps, and a striking bumper that emphasize its high-performance SUV image. BMW is currently deliberating on the name, considering options like X8, X8 M, and BMW XM.
Production will take place in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the home of BMW's X3, X5, and X7. Spartanburg has gained a reputation as BMW's SUV production hub, currently manufacturing a variety of new SUV models. The X8 is expected to go on sale in the first half of next year, likely priced higher than the X7 M50i, which starts at $99,800 (approximately 120 million KRW).
