Reports indicate that a new model of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is in the works. The second facelift of the mid-size SUV GLE is underway, with test vehicles spotted wearing camouflage.
Recent spy shots captured by foreign media reveal a new tail lamp design that will feature on the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE facelift. It appears that the triangular star-shaped LED tail lamps, used in the latest E-Class models, will also be introduced to the GLE.
The test vehicle's hood and front bumper are covered in camouflage, making it difficult to confirm specific changes. However, it is anticipated that the headlamps will be longer and the grille larger, with an added border.
The side profile is expected to show few significant differences from the current model. Like the EQS facelift, the infotainment system will feature two cameras mounted on the side mirrors, providing enhanced visibility and improved autonomous driving capabilities.
The rear section is also expected to feature changes around the tail lamps. The internal graphics will showcase a design upgrade consistent with the new E-Class, highlighting Mercedes' signature triangular star. The interior will likely see a redesigned steering wheel and dashboard layout.
The existing model features a panoramic setup with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster connected to a 12.3-inch center infotainment display. The new GLE is expected to adopt a separated display layout similar to the new E-Class, along with the latest MBUX software update.
The powertrain is expected to remain largely unchanged, likely retaining a lineup similar to the current model. It will probably offer four-cylinder and six-cylinder mild hybrid engines.
The current GLE 580, equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 510 horsepower, may remain as is. However, there is a possibility that the trend will continue towards a more powerful six-cylinder engine instead of the V8.
The upcoming facelift of the Mercedes GLE appears to be a response to BMW's 2027 X5. It seems that Mercedes plans to introduce this facelift before a complete redesign to compete with the BMW X5. Speculations suggest that the Mercedes GLE facelift will debut in 2025, with some expecting it to be unveiled next year and available for sale in 2026.
Additionally, the 2026 AMG GLE 53 PHEV model is expected to transition from a 429-horsepower six-cylinder mild hybrid engine to a 536-horsepower 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder full hybrid engine. The proportion of plug-in hybrids in the GLE lineup is likely to increase, indicating a strategic shift to reduce the emphasis on electric vehicles.
