Kia has officially launched the 2025 Bongo III EV electric truck, marking the start of its sales. This model features improvements in charging efficiency and increased driving range, enhancing user convenience.
The new Bongo III EV improves rapid charging speeds by increasing the thickness of the high-voltage cable wiring, allowing for a higher charging current. In simpler terms, it expands the electrical capacity from a two-lane road to a four-lane road. With the existing 150 kW standard, the charging time for 10% to 80% has been reduced from 47 minutes to just 32 minutes.
The Bongo III EV now comes equipped with a 60.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, which enhances energy density and extends the driving range to 135 miles (217 km) on a single charge—an increase of approximately 3.7 miles (6 km) compared to the previous model. It's not just performance that has improved.
The Bongo III EV also enhances user convenience. To accommodate off-road driving scenarios, Kia raised the battery ground clearance by an additional 0.4 inches (10 mm). The charging port now includes LED lighting for better visibility at night.
The selling prices for the new Bongo III electric vehicle are set at 43.25 million won for the Smart Selection, 44.5 million won for the GL, and 46.15 million won for the GLS. After applying government and local subsidies, the actual purchase price is expected to be in the mid-20,000s USD.
Kia plans to strengthen the Bongo III EV's position in the electric commercial vehicle market by enhancing charging performance, driving range, durability, and practicality.
Meanwhile, small cargo trucks have gained a reputation as essential vehicles for many people seeking affordable transportation options during tough economic times. Last year, the 1-ton truck market saw electric vehicle models selling over 17,000 units, while LPG models sold around 92,000 units.
Historically, diesel engines dominated the 1-ton truck market due to their cost-effectiveness. However, increased environmental regulations have phased them out, and currently, LPG models continue to outsell electric models.
