According to Hyundai Motor Group's information on new vehicle development, the number of hybrid car models will increase from 14 to 20. The current 14 models include 8 from Hyundai and 6 from Kia. Among these, Kia is preparing a second-generation model of the compact SUV Seltos as a successor, with a hybrid version expected to launch early next year.
The Seltos is a steady-selling model, with 310,000 units sold last year. Kia plans to add a hybrid trim to the second-generation Telluride, a North America-exclusive SUV model, in the first half of next year. Hyundai Motor Group aims to expand its hybrid car lineup because it expects the popularity of hybrid vehicles to continue for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, the full change model of the Seltos is expected to launch in the second half of this year. It will feature a new design distinct from the current model, and a hybrid powertrain is anticipated to be introduced. This full change model aims to enhance Kia's competitiveness in the compact SUV market.
The full change model of the Seltos will showcase Kia's latest design language, "Opposite United," along with the "Star Map" signature lighting. Recent spy shots reveal that the front features angular square headlights and vertically oriented LED daytime running lights. The radiator grille adopts a bold vertical pattern.
The rear of the Seltos resembles Kia's mid-size SUV EV5, featuring connected taillights and diagonal turn signals that add a modern touch. Inside, the vehicle is expected to offer a digital feel with a curved panoramic display, slim air vent design, and minimal physical buttons.
The new Seltos will likely feature an electronic column gear lever and wireless over-the-air (OTA) software updates, along with advanced convenience features. The most significant change in the Seltos full change model will be the addition of a hybrid powertrain.
The Seltos hybrid will incorporate Hyundai Motor Group's latest second-generation hybrid system, expected to enhance fuel efficiency and performance. An electronic all-wheel-drive (e-AWD) system will provide stable performance across various driving conditions.
Currently, the fuel efficiency of the Kona hybrid in the same class reaches a maximum of 46.7 miles per gallon, so the Seltos hybrid is expected to exceed 47 miles per gallon. The full change model of the Seltos will begin its domestic launch in the second half of the year, followed by a phased rollout in global markets, including North America, India, and Europe. Kia plans to start production at the Gwangju Plant 1, the existing factory for the Seltos, and will ramp up production at the Hwajeong Plant 2 to meet the anticipated high demand.
