The BMW 40i lineup has a strong following among enthusiasts, primarily due to the impressive performance of the traditional B58 3.0 gasoline engine it features.
Is this great engine just a matter of driving it? Does the power just come out? Haha!
You need to take care of it... that way you can enjoy full throttle without stress for a long time!!
Today’s featured vehicle is the youngest member of the BMW 40i lineup, the 2 Series G42 code M240i, which has come in for an engine oil change.
For the BMW M240i, I recommend the high-performance Motul 300V 0W30 engine oil.
This oil is designed for high-performance engines like the B58.

Wow... here’s the brand new M240i.
This is its first private engine oil change. BMWs typically have a scheduled oil change interval of 1.5 years or 12,427 miles, so owners take good care of them.
We work on various imported car models, and our shop handles the most new cars! People trust us to do a good job, and we appreciate it!
Today, the owner chose to use an OEM filter instead of the original oil filter to save on costs! (Usually, customers worry that using a non-genuine part during the first BSI might lead to issues, but OEM filters are fully compatible—though I can't guarantee every service center is 100% reliable; if you want safety, go with the original part!)
For high-performance engines like the B58, we recommend low-viscosity oils. The advantages include improved fuel economy, cost-effectiveness, lighter throttle response, and stable emissions data, while the downsides include challenges in heat management, lubrication, and oil consumption.
Many people opt for higher viscosity oils like 0W40 or 5W40, but some worry about fuel economy and the manual specifications. It can be a tricky balance!
In such cases, using a low-viscosity high-performance engine oil can resolve the issue, though prices can be steep, exceeding $8 per liter.
Just remember this! Haha!
Therefore, for today’s BMW M240i (G42/B58) model, I recommended the certified high-performance Motul 300V 0W30 oil.
Shall we get started?!
I’ll provide a complimentary full bottle of washer fluid.
We’ll skip checking the air cleaner since the mileage is ambiguous and head straight to lifting the car!
Oh no... I occasionally see oil leaks from the cork on new BMWs!
Since there’s no major issue, I just took a photo and used a washer and torque wrench during reassembly to ensure everything was secure.
Now, let’s change the oil filter.
We’re using a new cartridge filter and O-ring.
The reinstallation is perfectly OEM-compliant.
The oil filter is one of the components that gets tightened and loosened the most during car maintenance, so I secured it properly with a torque wrench to ensure it lasts.
I’ll tidy up the surroundings nicely.
Now, I’ll drain the engine oil.
Although the oil is still transparent, its viscosity doesn’t look great.
While visual assessments aren’t always accurate, I can make educated guesses based on experience!
Considering the previous oil and driving patterns, it’s best to maintain a consistent oil change schedule like today’s.
While the oil drains, I’ll conduct a quick inspection.
Since the AS period for all vehicles, including the BMW M240i, is relatively short, it’s essential to perform checks during this time.
While you might think the center will conduct thorough checks during BSI, that’s often not the case.
Fortunately, the vehicle is clean!
Now, all that’s left is to enjoy driving it! Haha!
Earlier, I mentioned there was an oil leak from the drain cock.
However, if you tighten it too much, the threads can get damaged, so I used a torque wrench to secure it properly.
Now, I’ll add the engine oil, using the Motul 300V 0W30.
This synthetic oil is renowned for its performance, and the high-performance 300V line is so advanced that it doesn’t even require specific import car oil standards... it’s the best of the best!
I only use officially imported distributor products.
I’ll level the oil after preheating it according to the conditions.
MAX settings complete!
Among the most critical conditions for oil performance is matching the oil quantity. When using the sport plus mode, the B58 tends to consume oil rapidly, which is a downside.
This way, it’s optimized.
That wraps up the engine oil change for the BMW G42 M240i.
The total time required for this service is about 40 minutes!
All done!
The work done on this vehicle is truly top-notch, but I worry a bit that after experiencing this level of oil quality, it might be hard to switch back to regular or even most synthetic oils! Haha!
We’ll continue to be here for you, so feel free to make an appointment anytime!
I hope you enjoy driving until the next change!
Thank you.
