Automobile transmission..Transmission
Manufacturers use different systems, but
as long as it’s an internal combustion vehicle, the basic principles are quite similar.
Modern vehicles have significantly improved performance and durability due to technological advancements.
It’s undeniable!
But do we really not need to maintain them?!
Especially since oil circulates in the system
and it’s what keeps the transmission moving.
They still claim it’s maintenance-free
and recommend just driving it?!
It’s amazing that such manuals exist
and that they tell vehicle owners this.
Today’s focus is on the most sold model in the BMW diesel lineup,
the G30 520d, along with the replacement process.
Is it really maintenance-free? Let’s explore this.
BMW’s transmission manufacturer is ZF
According to ZF's manual,
they recommend changing the transmission oil.
The manufacturer advises this, while the completed vehicle claims it’s maintenance-free..
So, who’s right?! Haha
ZF supplies BMW, so
BMW holds all the authority.
While manufacturing the vehicle, they set up some logic to claim that the transmission oil is good enough to be maintenance-free?!
If that’s the case.. if they are that confident!
Even if it’s not a lifetime warranty,
they should offer a longer warranty on the transmission compared to the engine.
This would instill more trust, right?!
I don’t even expect that, but if the transmission breaks down..
According to the official service center,
it would be nice if they could at least do partial repairs.
If there’s a transmission issue and error codes appear,
they usually respond by saying to replace the transmission assembly.;
The cost would be hundreds of thousands of won.
So, it’s a reality that we need to overhaul at a specialty shop for imported car transmissions.
When they first buy the car, they hear that they don’t need to do such things..
They think the car is good, so maintenance won’t cost much..
They purchased the car based on this explanation
Especially since there’s a free service for 100,000 kilometers or 5 years BSI, they maintained the car without spending money.. suddenly, expenses hit hard..
They’re looking for ways to save money. 😢
But the reality is different..
There’s no such thing as maintenance-free oil.
If there is such a thing?! I’d like an introduction.. haha

Although this post is about BMW’s maintenance-free transmission oil,
I will also explain the replacement process for additional parts used in the 520d vehicle,
Differential oil / TC oil / Fuel filter will also be replaced.
Let’s go through the replacement process.
★ This post is based on images from the work I performed, and
it includes promotions and information sharing for the shop.
Located near Hwaseong Dongtan Osan Suwon,a specialized shop for BMW maintenance and parts.
Search for "GioCar" in the search bar.
Fuel system components are quite sensitive, and
if they malfunction, the repair costs can be significantly high.
BMW vehicles offer free replacement once during the BSI period when the car is delivered.
Since they’ve driven for about 100,000 kilometers, it’s best to replace it around this time.
This usually coincides with the transmission oil replacement time.~
And TC oil, also known as transfer case oil, is abbreviated as TC.. It contains oil inside, so it’s referred to as TC oil.
In the past, it was often replaced with gear oil, but
Now, dedicated specification products are available, so
it’s good to work on it along with differential oil at intervals of around 50,000 kilometers.
Using new bolts for everything, including the fan, is essential.
After installing the transmission pan,
To lower the transmission temperature, we activate the cooling fan.
These days, it’s not easy to cool the transmission temperature in this weather.
But since this temperature is essential for leveling conditions,
we have to do it!~
How do we check the transmission temperature?! We check it accurately with a scanner!
* The oil changes in volume depending on the temperature,
and all BMW and other vehicles must conduct leveling within the specified temperature range.
it leaves no lingering doubts!~
before starting the engine.
I spent money, but now I can drive comfortably for a few years
so it feels refreshing?! Haha
Let’s take care of our own cars!
Since the warranty has expired, questioning the manual now
won’t help if something breaks down with BMW.
All you’ll receive is an expensive estimate.
Thank you.
