Recent reports indicate that Mercedes-Benz is considering discontinuing the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe. According to German media, low sales performance in the global market is the primary reason behind this decision. If this occurs, it may mirror the trend of BMW discontinuing its coupe-style midsize SUV, the X4, and could have significant implications for automotive manufacturers worldwide.
Notably, while the GLC Coupe accounts for about 20% of total GLC sales in South Korea, its global sales share for both the GLC and GLE Coupes remains at only 10-15%. Industry experts point out that the sales ratio in the Chinese market is merely 6%, which is one of the reasons Mercedes-Benz is considering discontinuation.
CEO Ola Källenius of the Mercedes Group has not yet made an official statement on this matter, but reports suggest internal discussions are underway regarding various possibilities. One option is to discontinue both models at the end of their current production cycles, while another is to consolidate the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe into a single model, thereby streamlining the lineup. This approach could reduce development costs and risks.
Additionally, Mercedes plans to convert 50% of its new vehicle lineup to electric vehicles by 2030. An electric SUV the size of the GLC is set to launch in 2026, likely replacing the current GLC model. However, it appears that this new vehicle will not have a coupe version.
While coupe-style SUVs offer sporty designs, they come with drawbacks, such as limited interior space due to their lower rooflines. This results in reduced headroom in the second row. Additionally, coupe-style SUVs are generally more expensive than their standard counterparts. For instance, the price of the GLC300 4MATIC starts at approximately $66,000, while the GLC300 4MATIC Coupe begins at around $69,000, reflecting a difference of about $3,000.
Recently, Mercedes introduced the CLE lineup, which integrates the C-Class and E-Class coupes and convertibles, while deciding to discontinue the A-Class and B-Class altogether. This strategy seems aimed at focusing on their core lineup.
In conclusion, while the likelihood of Mercedes discontinuing the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe seems low, interest in their future direction will likely persist. It is a crucial time to watch which path Mercedes will take.
