Hello.
I am Yunji, an automotive influencer.
In June, Hyundai launched the updated model of the Grandeur, the '2025 Grandeur.'
This summer, Kia's K8 facelift is set to hit the market, sparking a new rivalry in the large sedan segment and drawing significant interest from domestic consumers.
However, both sedans and electric vehicles have struggled in the domestic automotive market recently. In contrast, SUVs have been leading sales. The Grandeur, which previously held the title of 'best-selling car' last year, has seen its sales drop, trailing behind Hyundai's mid-size sedan, the Sonata, as of June. This disappointing outcome contrasts sharply with its past success. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the revival potential of the updated 2025 Grandeur, there is some good news: the price of the Kia K8 facelift has increased by approximately 400,000 KRW (about $300), bringing it closer to the pricing of the Grandeur.
The news of the Kia K8 facelift's price increase has shocked some consumers.
As a result, many consumers are now considering the Hyundai Grandeur, saying things like, "If that's the case, I'll just buy the Grandeur," and "Is it about design or brand value?" The once great value of the K8 seems to have diminished. Meanwhile, while the exterior design of the Grandeur remains unchanged, the updated 2025 model now includes the latest intelligent safety feature, 'Lane Keeping Assist (LFA) 2,' as standard across all trims. This feature enhances lane centering performance, improving driving convenience for users. Additionally, Hyundai has incorporated customer feedback by adding the popular 'steering wheel grip detection' feature as standard across all trims, boosting the model's competitive edge.
Additionally, the 2025 Grandeur will feature new specifications such as trunk lid lighting, rear seatbelt lighting, an interior fire extinguisher, and electronic shift column vibration warnings as standard. Despite these enhancements, the starting price for the 2025 Grandeur has only increased by 250,000 KRW (about $185), making it available from 37,680,000 KRW (about $28,000). The higher-end Calligraphy trim, which now includes a head-up display worth 990,000 KRW (about $740) and new patterned Nappa leather seats, has seen a price increase of 830,000 KRW (about $620), effectively lowering its price considering the added features.
What impact will the differing pricing strategies of the Grandeur and K8 have on sales?
However, the recent launch of the facelifted K8, which has signaled a price increase akin to a full model change, contrasts sharply with the current situation.
Consequently, the price gap between the Kia K8 and the Hyundai Grandeur, which previously exceeded 400,000 KRW (about $300), is expected to narrow to around 100,000 KRW (about $75). This change could potentially improve the sales volume of the Grandeur, which has faced recent sluggishness.
Of course, with the rising demand for hybrid vehicles in the automotive market, the sales of the Grandeur hybrid are crucial for overcoming these challenges. The price of the 2025 Grandeur hybrid is set at 42,910,000 KRW (about $32,000), which is only about 5,000,000 KRW (about $3,700) higher than the internal combustion engine version. However, with the benefits of eco-friendly vehicles and excellent fuel efficiency, the hybrid offers significant cost savings over time. Currently, more than half of the total sales are hybrids, reflecting this trend.
The 2025 Grandeur hybrid will also deliver an optimized ride experience with its 'Preview Electronic Control Suspension' and will utilize electronic AWD technology to actively distribute front and rear driving power based on various driving conditions. Additionally, it will feature 'Active Road Noise Control' to enhance cabin quietness. As a premium sedan, it boasts superior technology and product value. The existing premium large sedan, the Genesis G80, does not offer a hybrid powertrain, raising questions about whether the 2025 Grandeur hybrid can capture the demand in the premium sedan market. Even with the launch of the Kia K8 facelift hybrid, it remains to be seen if it can match the Grandeur hybrid's technological prowess and product value.
On July 25, following the teaser release of the Kia K8 facelift, the official launch of the new car will begin in August. The automotive community eagerly anticipates the outcome of this long-standing rivalry between the Grandeur and K8 sedans.
