Hello.
I am Uniji, an automotive influencer.
Currently, the Veloster, launched in 2011 alongside Hyundai's PYL brand, will be discontinued after 11 years.
Production will halt in July for the Veloster.
Considering that only the high-performance model, the Veloster N, remains in the lineup, the discontinuation means that the only remaining high-performance compact model will be the Elantra N.
Sales figures indicate that the Veloster's discontinuation stems from poor performance.
In 2020, 1,388 units of the Veloster N sold in South Korea, but after the Elantra N launched in 2021, sales plummeted to just 510 units.
This year, from January to April, only 99 units sold.
Additionally, sales figures overseas show that the Elantra N outsells the Veloster N by nearly double, indicating that the Elantra N has significantly diminished the Veloster N's market presence.
The Veloster's discontinuation reaffirms that hatchbacks have not gained much traction in South Korea.
Hyundai previously halted sales of the hatchback model i30 in 2020, suggesting that the domestic market, which favors sedans and SUVs, offers little room for hatchbacks.
Currently, Veloster production takes place at Ulsan Plant 1, but after discontinuation, the facility will make way for the production of the new Kona, set to launch in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Hyundai Veloster, which is now fading into history, introduced asymmetrical doors for the first time and aimed to attract young consumers with its appealing design and driving performance.
After its launch, Hyundai selected the Veloster as the first domestic model for its high-performance brand N, and based on the Veloster, the company consistently released various research and development and concept models, including the RM series.
