Hello.
I am Uniji (Yuka Post), an automotive influencer.
On the 27th, Kia held the 'Kia Tasman Tech Day' at Sebit Island in Seocho-gu, Seoul, where it showcased the technology behind the first pickup truck, 'The Kia Tasman.' This event allowed researchers to introduce and demonstrate the specialized technology and specifications of Tasman, Kia's first true pickup model that excels both on and off-road. Notably, Kia explained the body design applied to achieve characteristics of a traditional pickup, including a new pickup platform, towing performance, and durability with utility capacity. They also showcased various technologies and towing-specific features to enhance off-road performance, including a 2-speed ATC, an electronic differential lock, and dedicated terrain modes.
The Tasman features Kia's first 'Body on Frame' structure, which supports a robust steel frame capable of carrying up to 1,540 lbs (700 kg) and towing up to 7,717 lbs (3,500 kg). With a ground clearance of 9.9 inches (252 mm), it is designed to navigate rocky terrains and obstacles safely. As a result, it boasts superior durability and off-road capability compared to competitive models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
Additionally, the Tasman includes off-road specialized technologies such as an electronic differential lock (e-LD), a 2-speed ATC (Active Transfer Case), and TREK mode. The electronic differential lock ensures stable driving by distributing equal power to the left and right wheels, even when one wheel slips. Moreover, it can cross water up to 31.5 inches (800 mm) deep without allowing water to enter through the air intake, designed specifically for this purpose.
Despite this, the Kia Tasman boasts a versatile cargo space that seamlessly blends everyday practicality with adventure. The cargo bed measures 59.5 inches (1,512 mm) in length, 61.9 inches (1,572 mm) in width, and 21.3 inches (540 mm) in height, providing approximately 41.4 cubic feet (1,173 L) of ample space and a maximum payload capacity of 1,540 lbs (700 kg). The width between the wheelhouses is 46.7 inches (1,186 mm), allowing for standard pallets to fit, enhancing its utility compared to competitors. The cargo area includes a divider mounting groove for efficient organization and securing of cargo, a bed liner, cargo securing rails, and a 220V inverter, making it suitable for camping, leisure activities, and commercial use.
Kia has significantly improved the ride comfort and interior space issues often associated with pickup trucks. The rear seat space is among the largest in its class, and it excels in NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance compared to competing models. The rear seats feature sliding and reclining functions, a first in its class, and doors that open up to 80 degrees for easy entry and exit, as well as loading cargo. This gives the Tasman a competitive edge over popular mid-size pickups like the Chevrolet Colorado and Ssangyong Rexton Sports, ensuring it has strong market competitiveness.
Additionally, the Kia Tasman has evolved into a perfect leisure vehicle by enhancing cooling performance to optimize towing capacity and introducing the 'Trailer Brake Controller' and 'Trailer Stability Assist' for the first time in Kia vehicles. It can safely tow up to 7,717 lbs (3,500 kg), making it excellent for hauling large recreational items like camping trailers or boats. Furthermore, Kia has launched various genuine customization products for the Tasman, including single-decker and double-decker canopies, sport bars, and bed covers, catering to diverse consumer tastes and needs, thus providing a high-quality personalized experience.
Meanwhile, the Tasman offers an optimal driving experience anywhere, thanks to its excellent driving performance and spacious interior. To ensure stable vehicle behavior, Kia applied two separate mount bushings and four integrated mount bushings to connect the Tasman's chassis frame and body. The separate mount bushings, designed for crash performance, are located at the front of the vehicle, while the integrated mount bushings, which allow independent setting of front and rear as well as left and right stiffness, are applied near the center and rear for improved ride comfort and NVH performance. Kia also equipped the Tasman's front suspension with a high-mount double wishbone type suspension, enhancing durability and rust resistance for stable driving performance and high ground clearance. Additionally, the rear suspension features a rigid axle leaf spring type suspension, providing SUV-level comfort when unloaded and ensuring it can handle loads effectively when carrying cargo.
A Kia representative stated, "We expect the Tasman to assert Kia's strong presence in the off-road and pickup markets." As the Kia Tasman embarks on a journey to write a new chapter in the pickup truck market, we look forward to seeing what achievements it will bring. We appreciate your valuable opinions in the comments and wish you a joyful and happy day as we conclude this post.
