Volvo has revived the XC70, once dubbed the "dream car for lifestyle dads," after nearly nine years. However, this time, it has transformed into a plug-in hybrid SUV instead of a traditional wagon. Developed for the Chinese market, this model offers a pure electric driving range of 124 miles (200 km, based on CLTC standards) and is notable for being the first vehicle to apply Volvo's new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform.

The XC70 is a mid-size SUV that is larger than the XC60 but smaller than the XC90, offering more interior space. The front features Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights and an active grille shutter that optimizes aerodynamics. The rear integrates C-shaped taillights into the rear glass, creating a modern impression. Overall, it boasts a sleek and luxurious exterior design that reflects the design elements of the EX90.

Although Volvo has not yet revealed the interior, they plan to implement an "intelligent interface" with minimal physical buttons, a digital instrument cluster, and Qualcomm's latest infotainment chipset (SA8295). Additionally, it will feature Level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities based on ADAS, enhancing driver convenience and safety.

Upon closer examination of the changes, the new XC70 is developed based on Volvo's new SMA platform. This platform is optimized for plug-in hybrid vehicles and will be applied to various models in the future. The XC70 comes equipped with a 39.5 kWh battery, providing a pure electric driving range of 124 miles (200 km, based on CLTC). Furthermore, it combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 585 horsepower and a maximum torque of 667 lb-ft (905 Nm). It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds.

The main competitors of the XC70 include the BMW X5 xDrive45e, Mercedes-Benz GLE 350e, and Audi Q7 55 TFSI e. All these models are plug-in hybrid SUVs and are considered competitive in terms of electric driving range and performance.

As a result, the XC70 boasts superior specifications in terms of electric driving range and performance compared to its competitors. Developed to meet the long-distance driving demands of Chinese consumers, it appears to be an attractive alternative for those hesitant about transitioning to electric vehicles.

Currently, the XC70 is set to launch exclusively in the Chinese market, and the decision regarding international availability remains undecided. Volvo plans to consider global release based on market responses and demand in the future. However, with the shift away from traditional wagon styles, the likelihood of a return to that design seems low, leading to some disappointment among consumers who preferred the classic wagon style, especially as Volvo strengthens its SUV-focused product lineup.
