Since its debut in 1975, the BMW 3 Series has sold over 16 million units worldwide, establishing itself as a core model for BMW and one of the most successful sports sedans in the global market. It is particularly noted for its dynamic driving performance, sophisticated design, and luxurious interior, embodying BMW's identity.

The BMW 3 Series has undergone steady evolution through seven generations, starting with the E21 in 1975 and leading up to the current G20. Each generation has evolved through design and technological innovations that reflect the era, emphasizing driving pleasure with features such as a rear-wheel-drive platform, a 50:50 weight distribution, and sharp handling. The high-performance M3 model, in particular, offers exceptional track performance while maintaining practicality for everyday use, making it a favorite among car enthusiasts.

The next-generation 3 Series, recently captured in spy shots, is set for an official launch in 2026 and will be sold as the 2027 model. This model will feature BMW's new electrified platform, the 'Neue Klasse (NK)', which will coexist with internal combustion engine models. While the internal combustion engine models will maintain the existing CLAR platform, they are expected to undergo significant exterior changes by incorporating some design elements from the NK. Notably, the new 'M350i' is expected to succeed the current M340i and will feature quad exhausts.

The fully revamped next-generation 3 Series model is expected to feature a more aggressive front bumper design, a lowered roofline, a new kidney grille design, and sharper character lines on the sides, giving it a sportier and more dynamic appearance compared to the existing model. Additionally, the internal combustion engine models are likely to reflect the unique features of the Neue Klasse, including vertical door posts, shorter rear overhangs, and wider rear wheel arches. The interior design is expected to incorporate BMW's next-generation interior concept unveiled at CES 2025, featuring a large head-up display that spans from pillar to pillar, a touchscreen with minimal physical buttons, a customizable digital instrument cluster, and high-quality materials for finishing.

The powertrain lineup will include a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo mild hybrid, a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder turbo (M350i), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a high-performance M3 (Mild Hybrid) model. Notably, the M350i will combine a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine with a 48V mild hybrid system, potentially delivering over 400 horsepower compared to the current M340i. Furthermore, the next-generation i3 and M3 are expected to offer higher torque, quicker response, and longer driving ranges with their electrified powertrains.

Currently, the selling price for the 2025 BMW 3 Series in Korea starts at approximately 5,620,000 KRW (around 4,200 USD) for the 320i, 5,850,000 KRW (around 4,400 USD) for the 320d, and 8,220,000 KRW (around 6,200 USD) for the M340i. Based on this, the expected prices for the next-generation 3 Series are approximately 5,900,000 KRW (around 4,400 USD) for the 320i and around 8,800,000 KRW (around 6,600 USD) for the M340i. The electric model, i3, is expected to start around 8,500,000 KRW (around 6,400 USD) for the base model, with the high-performance M3 model possibly exceeding 130,000,000 KRW (around 98,000 USD) depending on battery performance and driving range.

The next-generation BMW 3 Series is expected to officially launch in the global market in the second half of 2026, with an anticipated introduction to the domestic market in the first half of 2027. The strategy of coexisting internal combustion engine models and electric models represents BMW's significant attempt to target diverse consumer segments, and market reactions will be closely monitored. Additionally, once the 2027 model of the 3 Series hits the market, evaluations will likely focus on improvements in fuel efficiency, driving performance, and interior convenience compared to existing models. This will help determine whether BMW can maintain its stronghold in the midsize sedan market.
