Hyundai Motor officially announced the key specifications and prices of its next-generation hydrogen electric vehicle, 'The All-New NEXO,' on June 10, marking the start of sales after a complete overhaul for the first time in seven years. The All-New NEXO, which has consistently led the hydrogen electric vehicle market since its initial launch in 2018, underwent comprehensive innovations in design, performance, safety, and convenience features through this complete overhaul.

The new NEXO diversifies from the previous single trim configuration to three trims: Exclusive (76,440,000 KRW), Exclusive Special (79,280,000 KRW), and Prestige (83,450,000 KRW). When combined with the government hydrogen vehicle subsidy of 22,500,000 KRW (approximately 16,800 USD) and local government subsidies (700,000 KRW to 1,500,000 KRW), the minimum actual purchase price can drop to about 38,940,000 KRW. This pricing strategy secures competitiveness against similarly sized eco-friendly sedans while aiming to serve as a bridge for the popularization of hydrogen electric vehicles.

However, the most noticeable change is the significantly improved powertrain. The NEXO combines a 150 kW electric motor, a 94 kW fuel cell stack, and an 80 kW high-voltage battery, achieving a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 7.8 seconds. Additionally, it increases the hydrogen tank storage capacity to 6.69 kg, allowing for a driving range of 720 km on a single charge, the longest record among hydrogen passenger cars worldwide. Furthermore, the charging time is approximately 5 minutes, showcasing remarkable charging efficiency compared to electric vehicles.

In terms of design, the NEXO applies Hyundai's new design language, 'Art of Steel,' for the first time, achieving a robust yet sleek style. The interior design, conceptualized as 'my second living room,' includes a vision roof, digital side mirrors, a fingerprint authentication system, Hyundai AI assistant, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system, creating a luxurious space that merges elegance with cutting-edge technology. It also features both indoor and outdoor V2L functions, allowing it to be used as an external power source during camping or outdoor activities.

Additionally, the NEXO boasts a full range of safety and convenience features, including ▲ Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 (FCA2), ▲ Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), and ▲ Lane Keeping Assist 2 (LFA2), all available as standard or optional features. Notably, features such as ▲ Front/Rear/Side Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-F/R/S), ▲ Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2), and ▲ Steering Wheel Grip Detection System (HoD) significantly enhance user convenience and safety.

Hyundai has also established a comprehensive care program called 'NEXO Every Care' for NEXO buyers. This program includes ▲ up to 55% support for hydrogen charging costs for two years (up to 55,000 KRW or approximately 41 USD per month), and ▲ a discount of 3,000,000 KRW (approximately 2,250 USD) when returning a certified used NEXO. Additionally, it offers ▲ emergency delivery for up to 100 km in case of hydrogen shortages, ▲ one free inspection per year for eight years, and a 10-year/160,000 km warranty on parts specific to hydrogen electric vehicles, significantly reducing the burden of operating a hydrogen vehicle. There is even a used car warranty program that guarantees up to 68% of the residual value within three years of purchase.

Hyundai has not overlooked the inconvenience of hydrogen refueling. The new NEXO includes a 'Route Planner' feature that allows users to check real-time operational status, the number of waiting vehicles, and refueling availability at 214 hydrogen stations across the country. This feature analyzes hydrogen supply and routes to recommend intermediate refueling stations or suggest the optimal path to reach the destination without any hassle.

Meanwhile, a Hyundai representative stated, "The All-New NEXO embodies not only the technological advancements of hydrogen electric vehicles but also innovation at every touchpoint that customers experience," adding, "It will be a key model leading the future of eco-friendly mobility."

As a result, the NEXO is essentially the only option available for hydrogen electric vehicles currently sold in Korea. While some foreign brands like Toyota's 'Mirai' and Honda's 'Clarity' exist, they have either ceased production or stopped importing, leaving no real competition in the market. However, the speed at which hydrogen refueling infrastructure expands and stabilizes fuel prices will present future challenges. It remains to be seen whether this complete overhaul of the NEXO can serve as a catalyst for the popularization of hydrogen vehicles.
